Goal of the day: Ross Barkley (Everton) vs Man City

Sunday, May 4, 2014

England World Cup hopeful Ross Barkley provided the game's highlight despite being on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller between Everton and Manchester City.

City made an enterprising start on Saturday but Everton took a 10th-minute lead through a strike of real quality.

Leighton Baines and Steven Naismith combined down the left to tee up Barkley on the edge of the area.

There seemed little danger when Barkley picked the ball up, but the 20-year-old produced a stunning curling shot that looped and dipped over Joe Hart.

However, Sergio Agüero and an Edin Džeko double turned the game around before Romelu Lukaku pulled a goal back for the hosts.

"Ross Barkley's goal was absolutely phenomenal," Everton boss Roberto Martínez told a press conference.

England manager Roy Hodgson was in attendance at Goodison Park and Barkley might have captured his attention.

Martínez added: "He is a young man and we tend to get carried away too quickly, but if you ask me he is unique.

"The balance he has on the ball, his technical ability and mentality, he can offer something very different to the England squad.

"If the England manager thinks that he can offer something now, great, nothing will faze him. If not, he is still young and is going to grow into something unique in English football."
