Chelsea, which lost May’s final on penalties, began the new European campaign emphatically with a comfortable 4-0 win over Bordeaux at Stamford Bridge.
The home side were quickly into their stride and took the lead after 14 minutes when Frank Lampard sent his header into the far corner on Jose Bosingwa’s cross.
A second goal looked inevitable as the Blues continued to dominate.
And it came on the half-hour mark through Joe Cole, beating two centre-backs at the near post to nod home Lampard's corner.
Florent Malouda added Chelsea's third in the 82nd minute as he put clear by Lampard’s flick before lashing a low shot past Ulrich Rame.
Anelka added a fourth in stoppage time with his first Champions League goal since 2001, when he scored for Paris St Germain against AC Milan in a 1-1 draw.
Champions League debutants CFR Cluj stole the headlines by stunning AS Roma 2-1 at Stadio Olimpico, which will host this season’s final on May 27.
Roma took the lead after 17 minutes when Christian Panucci headed in a pass from Daniele De Rossi for his 13th goal in 99 European matches.
But Argentine forward Juan Culio equalised ten minutes later with a diagonal strike from the edge of the area after a sweet one two with Eugen Trica.
He then volleyed home a loose header from Marco Cassetti four minutes into the second-half to give the Romanian champions a night to remember.
