Premier League Preview: Liverpool v Man United

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Liverpool will host Premier League champions and fierce rivals Manchester United at Anfield.

It is one of the most intense rivalries in English football — England’s most successful club against the club who are rapidly closing the trophy gap, both domestically and in Europe.

For your information, Liverpool have suffered more Premier League defeats (18), dropped more points (68) and conceded more goals (48) to the Red Devils than to any other club.

Liverpool are unbeaten in 10 Premier League matches and their last league defeat was a 3-0 loss to United at Old Trafford in March, and United were also the only opponents who left Anfield with all three points last season.

Both sides will be seeking a morale boost of a victory to contest the title this season.

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, who was sent off during last season’s encounter at Old Trafford, states it’s a match they need to win if they want to compete for the title.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez was given a major boost when two of his key players, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, have both been passed fit to play against United.

Gerrard missed England's 4-1 win in Croatia on Wednesday after underwent a minor groin surgery last month, and Torres has recovered from a hamstring injury.

Meanwhile, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to hand the £30 million recruit Dimitar Berbatov his debut for the club.

Fergie has also been boosted by the fitness of his three key men. Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick all now look likely to be fit and available to face Liverpool.

In addition, the 66-year-old manager has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo could be a surprise inclusion for the showdown.

The Portuguese star has been sidelined since June after undergoing an ankle surgery and initially scheduled for an October comeback, but Ferguson insisted recently that Ronaldo's recovery was progressing excellently.

Possible line-up:

Liverpool: Pepe Reina; Álvaro Arbeloa, Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Andrea Dossena; Javier Mascherano; Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Ryan Babel; Fernando Torres, Robbie Keane

Manchester United: Edwin Van der Sar; Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra; Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes; Carlos Tevez, Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney
