Chelsea captain John Terry scored the lone goal to hand the Blues a hard-fought 1-0 win over AS Roma at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz Felipe Scolari's side came closest to breaking the deadlock in a quiet first half when Frank Lampard's fierce free-kick grazed the crossbar.

Terry finally broke the deadlock in the 77th minute as he rose to powerfully head home Lampard's cross.

Chelsea top of Group A with seven points from three matches while Roma are now in danger of missing out on a place in the next round.

The defeat leaves Anorthosis three points off Group B leaders Inter.

Bundesliga side Werder Bremen played out its third successive draw with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Panathinaikos.

The visitors took the lead on 29 minutes through Per Mertesacker, although there was a hint of controversy as the Bremen defender appeared to control the ball with his arm before firing it home.

Vangelis Mantzios looked to have revived the Greek side's campaign after scoring a brace - both headers - in the 36th and 68th minute.

But Portuguese hitman Hugo Almeida was the hero for Thomas Schaaf's men as he struck a late equaliser to deny Panathinaikos' first win in the Champions League this season.

Barcelona routed FC Basel 5-0 and made them the only team in the competition to have a 100 percent record after three matches.

Lionel Messi put Barcelona in front after just four minutes as he collected a chip over the defense from Daniel Alves and fired the ball past Franco Costanzo.

Barça doubled the cushion on 15 minutes when Sergio Busquets scored from a pass by Xavi, and Bojan Krkic then made it 3-0 seven minutes later with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Bojan extended his side's lead just a minute into the second-half after a speedy counter-attack, and two minutes later Xavi struck a low shot to hand Basel its third successive defeat.

Barcelona remains at the top of Group C and is on the verge of a place in the last 16.

Shakhtar enjoyed most of the possession, but they were made to pay for their inability to score when Liédson fired home the winner in the 76th minute with Sporting's first shot on target.

Shakhtar have three points from three matches, while Sporting sit second with six.

Robbie Keane 14

Liverpool continues to share the Group D lead with Atlético Madrid after a fascinating 1-1 draw at Vicente Calderón.

The Reds, without former Atlético prince Fernando Torres due to a hamstring injury, took the lead after 14 minutes when Robbie Keane netted his second goal for the club.

Sergio Agüero, claimed was tired by Atlético boss Javier Aguirre, came on at the start of the second half for ex-Liverpool player Luis García as the home side went with three strikers.

Maniche had a 56th-minute equaliser ruled out by a poor offside decision, and Simão saw his shot a minute later pushed against the post by Jose Reina.

Atlético kept pushing and drew level with seven minutes remaining as Simão, who almost became a Liverpool player in the summer of 2005, drilled home the leveler to rescue a point for Los Rojiblancos.

PSV Eindhoven claimed its first Group D win after edging out Marseille 2-0 at Philips Stadion.

Danny Koevermans put PSV ahead as he nodded in Stijn Wuytens' corner after 72 minutes.

The 29-year-old then added a second five minutes from time to keep PSV's slim hopes of finishing in the top two alive.

PSV have three points from three matches while Marseille must now look to win their final three matches to climb back into the contest.
