Bierhoff warns England over foreign influx

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff has warned England that they will always be handicapped at international level until they reduce the huge influx of foreign players at English clubs.

The Euro 1996 hero echoing last week's comments from the Football Association technical director Sir Trevor Brooking, who pointed to the fact that, while English clubs contested last season's European Cup final, more German players had featured in the Champions League as a whole.

Bierhoff said: "I think the English league is the best league in the world, but the big clubs use a lot of foreign players.

"You can see English clubs are well represented in the Champions League. But if you look at the statistics then at the end of the season the English players played fewer games in the competition than the German ones.

"English football should think about growing their own talent and giving them support."
