Fabián Canobbio 48 |
Bernd Schuster's week went from bad to worse as the pressure increased on the under-fire coach after Real Madrid's 1-0 defeat at Real Valladolid.
The German coach had already been heavily criticised following their embarrassing Copa del Rey exit at the hands of minnows Real Unión, and more bad news also come through this week that striker Ruud van Nistelrooy would miss the rest of the season with a serious knee ligament injury.
Fabián Canobbio scored the lone goal three minutes after the break as the Uruguayan forward fired a powerful left-footed shot past Iker Casillas from the edge of the area.
The champions looked rattled by the goal and Schuster sent Wesley Sneijder in for Rafael van der Vaart six minutes later.
In the closing minutes, Valladolid keeper Sergio Asenjo made a superb save to deny Raúl after a sloppy Valladolid back pass, and Pedro López cleared off the line from Fabio Cannavaro's header.
Real's misery was compounded in the closing stages with defender Gabriel Heinze was sent off after two bookings within a minute, the second for complaining.
And there was another shock result at the Mestalla as Valencia went down 3-2 to Sporting Gijón.
Luis Morán beat the offside trap to fire Sporting in front in the 20th minute and David Barral doubled the lead six minutes after the break.
David Villa pulled one back against his former team with a penalty in the 69th minute to mark his 100th goal for the club.
But Diego Castro restored the two-goal cushion nine minutes from time with a fantastic left-footed volley.
Juan Mata grabbed a second for Valencia in stoppage time, but they could not snatch an equaliser.
