Atlético Madrid sack Javier Aguirre

Tuesday, February 3, 2009

Troubled Spanish giants Atlético Madrid have fired coach Javier Aguirre after failing to overturn Rojiblancos' worst new year start for over a decade following the 2-1 defeat to mid-table Valladolid on Sunday.

Club president Enrique Cerezo told Cadena SER radio that Abel Resino, currently in charge at Castellón, would replace the Mexican for the rest of the season from Tuesday.

"It's very sad but we understand it's the best thing right now and we need to move forward," Cerezo said.

A press conference has been scheduled for 13:00 local time on Tuesday, to allow Aguirre to bid farewell to the side that he took over in 2006 after four moderately successful years at Osasuna.

Despite having guided the club into the UEFA Cup last term and the Champions League this year, a dreadful start to 2009 has seen Aguirre's time run out mere months before his contract was due to end.

The final nail in Aguirre's coffin was Sunday's defeat at home to Valladolid — their fifth loss in six matchs, with one draw.
