FA revoke Lampard's red

Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard had his red card in the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool overturned on Tuesday.

Lampard was sent off by referee Mike Riley after a challenge on Xabi Alonso even though TV replays showed the Blues midfielder got to the ball first.

But an independent comission has overturned the decision, resulting in the withdrawal of his three-match suspension.

The Blues were drawing 0-0 when Lampard was dismissed but eventually lost the match 2-0 with a late brace from Fernando Torres.

"It's good that I can move on, but a shame that we lost the game because of it," Lampard told Sky Sports News.

"I presumed it would be rescinded anyway so I was quite confident about that.

"It was obviously a mistake, we all make mistakes. Footballers make mistakes just as much as anyone - and the referee did.

"All I think it needs is the referees to be given time to consult the other officials.

"There are four of them now and they’re all looking at it from different angles. You want them to use common sense."
