AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini has confirmed that he will retire from football at the end of this campaign, despite some voices suggesting that he should go on another year.

Maldini, who has been a loyal servant to the Rossoneri for his entire professional career, turns 41 in June and he admits that his legs will not be able to carry him through another tough season next year.

Maldini told the club's official website: "I am still here today because I still have fun playing.

"I think that you need to be lucky and avoid major injuries to enjoy a career like mine.

"However, even my body has begun to feel the strains, and this will be my last season. I don't think that my body will allow me to play beyond this (season) at the highest level."

The former Italy international played his final derby last Sunday and was welcomed by a very respectful banner displayed by Inter Milan supporters. The message on the banner said: Per 20 anni nostro rivale, ma nella vita sempre leale (For 20 years our opponent, but in life always loyal).

This scene proved yet again that Maldini is one of those few players who is respected by all fans, irrespective of which team they support.
