World governing body FIFA has called for a minute's silence ahead of Tuesday and Wednesday's World Cup qualifying matches, as a mark of respect to the victims of Sunday's stadium stampede in Ivory Coast.

At least 22 people were killed and 132 were wounded in a stampede that came about after part of a wall collapsed in the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium prior to the World Cup qualifier between Ivory Coast and Malawi in Abidjan.

"The minute's silence is a mark of respect for the African football family and in memory of the persons who lost their lives outside of the stadium in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on 29 March 2009, ahead of the preliminary competition match in the same competition between Ivory Coast and Malawi," said FIFA in a statement.

Ivory Coast and Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou expressed his sorrow to the injured fans and the families of those who died.

He said: "They need to feel we are behind them because they came to support us and unfortunately things went badly. I don't do this alone but with all the team."
