Goalkeeper ends career over flung firework

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Former Rapid Vienna goalkeeper Georg Koch admits he was quitting the game because he is still suffering problems of hearing and balance following the incident when a firecracker going off near him in a derby match against Austria Vienna last August.

The 37-year-old was severely injured after the flare, thrown from the stand with the travelling Austria supporters behind his goal, exploded in front of him and he had to be stretchered off.

"I hoped right to the last that I could carry on playing but I must recognise there is no point," Koch told German sports news agency SID.

"Two idiots are responsible for my retirement," said Koch, adding that "such an act should have consequences."

Koch rescinded his contract, which had been due to run to June, last January and returned to his home near Düsseldorf.
