The Netherlands registered their fourth straight win in Group 9 after beating Scotland 3-0 in Amsterdam.
Kenny Miller squandered a great chance to give Scotland an early lead as the striker hesitated too long before shooting and Joris Mathijsen recovered to put in a last-ditch block.
The visitors fell behind on the half-hour mark when Mark van Bommel floated a cross from the right towards the back post, where Klaas-Jan Huntelaar got beyond Gary Caldwell to steer his header back across Allan McGregor and into the net.
Any hope of a Scots fightback was extinguished on the stroke of half-time as Robin van Persie headed in Arjen Robben's corner from close range, with little hindrance from the Scottish defence.
Scotland thought they had pulled one back on 74 minutes when Caldwell headed home from a corner, but the defender's effort was ruled out, apparently because Gary Teale had blocked goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg's attempt to get to the corner.
And just three minutes later, Dirk Kuyt swept home a third goal from the penalty spot after Huntelaar had been brought down by Christophe Berra.
Lineups:
Netherlands: Stekelenburg; van der Wiel, Mathijsen, Ooijer, van Bronckhorst; van Bommel, de Jong (Schaars 80); Kuyt, van Persie (Sneijder 65), Robben; Huntelaar (Afellay 80)
Scotland: McGregor; Alexander (Hutton 73), Berra, Caldwell, Naysmith; Brown, Darren Fletcher, Ferguson, McCormack, Teale (Morrison 85); Miller (Steven Fletcher 71)
