Gonzalo Higuaín scored a sublime goal to earn Real Madrid a hard fought 1-0 win over Málaga at La Rosaleda.
It was an uninspiring start from both sides, as they struggled to find any real rhythm and denied each other enough space to turn on the style.
After a goalless first half, Higuaín made the breakthrough early on in the second period. Winning the ball inside his own half, he went on a strong run straight through the midfield, getting all the way into the edge of the box before sliding a right-footed shot inside the far post for his 16th goal.
The game burst into life after the goal, with Rafael van der Vaart finding himself through on goal seconds later, but he could only chip onto the roof of the net.
Goalkeeper Iñaki Goitia then parried chances by Sergio Ramos and Higuaín over the crossbar to keep Málaga in the game.
But the hosts could not find the equalizer, and Higuaín had yet another great chance with five minutes remaining, but his shot just trickled wide of the far post.

Barcelona maintained their hopes of reclaiming the La Liga title with a 1-0 victory at Valladolid.
The visitors nearly took the lead after just four minutes, but Seydou Keita headed Xavi's cross wildly over goal with only goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo to beat.
Samuel Eto'o then teed up a clear scoring chance for Xavi in the 35th minute, but with the whole goal visible the Spain international blasted high into the stands.
And it was Eto'o himself who broke the deadlock five minutes later. Xavi chipped the striker's pass back to him as he ran into the area and Eto'o volleyed a lob over onrushing Asenjo.
Andrés Iniesta almost made it two moments later but his curling effort was punched clear by Asenjo at full stretch.
