Dutch tactician Martin Jol has returned to his homeland to take over as coach of Ajax next season.

The 53-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Dutch giants after impressing with Hamburg.

He led Hamburg to the UEFA Cup and German Cup semifinals in his first season in charge and the team ended fifth in the Bundesliga.

Jol replaces Marco van Basten, who resigned three weeks ago after missing out on a Champions League berth.

"Martin has all the qualities that the new coach of Ajax should have in our opinion," Ajax chief executive Rik van den Boog told the club's official website.

"He is experienced and has gained that experience both in the Netherlands and abroad.

"He has worked for big and not so big clubs and has shown he can get the maximum potential out of his players.

"He is furthermore a coach who has proven that he is willing to give talented young players a chance, which is of the utmost importance for us.

"As the club's management we have not been working together in this structure for very long, but I am very happy with the way we collaborated to make this possible. It was an exciting and fascinating period, with an excellent result for Ajax.''

Jol added: "Ajax is a fantastic football club and I am really looking forward to getting started.

"I have really enjoyed my time at Hamburg. It's a big club and Hamburg is a great city to work and live in," he added.
