Premier League round-up: United and Chelsea seal derby glory

Monday, May 11, 2009

Manchester United took a massive step closer to the Premier League title as they saw off city rivals Manchester City 2-0 at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils can now secure the title with a game to spare next Saturday by drawing with Arsenal if they beat Wigan on Wednesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo put the hosts ahead in the 18th minute as his free-kick deflected off Nigel de Jong and dipped beyond Shay Given, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.

Carlos Tévez came close to increasing the advantage on 31 minutes when his curling effort crashed back off the woodwork as Given stood rooted to the spot.

The Argentine hit the goal frame again on the stroke of half-time after being fed by Dimitar Berbatov, but this time, the ball went into the net.

Robinho squandered a glorious chance to haul City back into the match just minutes into the second half when as Elano's driven pass put the ex-Real Madrid star in on goal but he scooped the ball wide of the target.

Ronaldo was substituted before the hour mark, much to his disgust, and made his feelings known by throwing his tracksuit top to the ground.

Chelsea bounced back in style from their controversial Champions League semis defeat to Barcelona by thrashing London derby rivals Arsenal 4-1 at Emirates Stadium.

The visitors snatched the lead after 28 minutes when Alex headed in a Didier Drogba free-kick with goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański rooted to the spot.

Former Gunners idol Nicolas Anelka struck a superb second seven minutes before the break as he ran unchallenged from the halfway line before riffling a low, swerving effort from 25 yards.

Arsenal's misery increased four minutes after the interval when Kolo Touré tried to intercept an Ashley Cole cross but turned the ball into his own net.

Substitute Nicklas Bendtner nodded in Bacary Sagna’s cross on 70 minutes to make it 3-1, but Florent Malouda wrapped up the points when poking home after Anelka’s 86th-minute shot hit a post.
