Real Madrid have confirmed they have appointed Manuel Pellegrini, currently with Villareal, as the club's new coach.

The 55-year-old Chilean will replace Juande Ramos, who took over at Madrid in December after Bernd Schuster was fired.

"Real Madrid and Manuel Pellegrini have reached a deal for the Chilean coach to be the first-team head coach during the forthcoming season," read a statement on the club's official website.

Pellegrini has spent the last five years in charge of Real's La Liga rivals Villarreal.

His fluid style of attacking football got Villarreal into the Champions League twice during his five-years in charge, including a run to the semifinals in 2006 when they were unfortunate to lose to Arsenal.

Last season the Yellow Submarine ended up as runners-up behind Los Merengues, while this term they ended the campaign in fifth spot.

Although he did not win any major silverware at Villarreal, Pellegrini enjoyed plenty of success in South America, winning trophies in Chile, Argentina and Ecuador during spells at River Plate, San Lorenzo, Liga de Quito and Universidad Católica.
