Serie A round-up: Milan claim third as Maldini waves goodbye

Monday, June 1, 2009

AC Milan clinched third place in Serie A with a 2-0 win over Fiorentina on the day that Paolo Maldini brought an end to his 24 years as a professional footballer.

The home side reinforced their fair play with the entire Artemio Franchi stadium giving Maldini a standing ovation before and after the match.

There were no goals in the first half but Kaká broke the deadlock on 55 minutes after pouncing on a loose ball in the area.

Alexandre Pato then put the result beyond doubt with 15 minutes remaining when he ran onto a through ball and flicked the ball over Sebastien Frey.

The referee blew a preliminary final whistle to allow the stadium to rise once again to pay tribute to Maldini as he left the field of play for the last time, before bringing the game to its official end moments later.
