Friday, July 24, 2009

Brazilian forward Keirrison has put pen to paper on a five-year contract with Spanish and European champions Barcelona, but he will go straight out on loan.

The Catalan outfit will pay Palmeiras an initial €14 million with the possibility of an additional €2 million depending on first-team appearances.

The prolific 20-year-old arrived in Barcelona on Thursday and was due to have a photo shoot at the club's offices at the Camp Nou.

Keirrison told www.fcbarcelona.com: "I'm very happy to be here and fulfil my dream of signing for the best club in the world.

"Over the next five years I hope to play some great football and give my all for Barça.

"I’m lucky enough to join Barça at a very young age. I have time to show what I can do and help Barça win titles.

"I hope to earn a place in the team just like the other Brazilian forwards that played for Barça."

However, the youngster will not be a part of Barcelona's squad for the 2009-10 campaign and will instead go on loan to another European club to gain experience.

Coach Pep Guardiola added: "He's very young and has some great statistics.

"It's difficult to find a goalscorer and the club has decided to sign him but in principle he'll go out on loan. I will not be counting on him for this season."

Keirrison, whose full name is Keirrison da Souza Carneiro, was one of the sensations of the 2008 season in Brazil, during which he scored 21 league goals for Coritiba. He moved to Palmeiras in January and scored five goals in seven league matches.
