Vincenzo Montella has announced his retirement from professional football after almost 20 years in the game.

The 35-year-old is one of the few remaining players at AS Roma to have been a part of the side that captured the Scudetto under Fabio Capello in 2001.

L'Aeroplanino, or the little aeroplane, has been idolised by the Giallorossi fans ever since he scored four goals in the derby against Lazio in a 5-1 win seven years ago.

Montella scored 94 goals in 215 appearances for the Lupi. He also played for Italy 20 times and scored three goals.

"When taking this decision I considered that you have to have the strength to retire when it still saddens some people," Montella told www.asromanews.it.

"It is a strange feeling but it's a decision that I took having thought about it long and hard.

"There are times in life when you have to make decisions and I have made mine."
