Liverpool suffered more title misery after being held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City at Anfield.
After a dour first half the game exploded into life five minutes into the second half when Martin Škrtel provided the finishing touch to a free-kick from Steven Gerrard to fire the Reds in front.
The Reds were staring at a sixth league defeat after City turned the game on their head with goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland.
But 74 second later, Liverpool were level as Yossi Benayoun scored from close-range after David Ngog's shot was deflected across the face of goal.
