Lionel Messi struck an extra-time winner as Barcelona came from a goal down to claim a 2-1 extra-time win over Estudiantes in the FIFA Club World Cup final.

The two sides traded early chances before Mauro Boselli slipped between Carles Puyol and Éric Abidal to steer Juan Manuel Díaz's cross from the left into the net at the near post.

But substitute Pedro Rodríguez, fresh from his record-breaking goal in the semi-finals against Atlante, drew Barça level in the 89th minute with another header.

The goal sent the match to extra-time, when the European champions made all the running.

And Ballon d’Or winner Messi popped up in the 110th minute to chest home the winner and ensure yet another trophy would be heading back to the Camp Nou with record-breaking Barça.

Earlier, Asian champion Pohang Steelers of South Korea beat Mexican club Atlante on penalties to finish third.
