Javier Mascherano: Rafa Benítez for Inter Milan

Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano believes former coach Rafa Benítez can fill the boots of José Mourinho at Inter Milan — and wouldn't mind joining him there himself.

Benítez is in pole position to take over the reins at the San Siro after he left Liverpool by mutual consent on Thursday.

Reports suggest Inter president Massimo Moratti is set to meet the Spaniard in Sardinia and a deal could be sealed in the next 48 hours.

"Only Benítez could take the place of a coach like Mourinho," Mascherano told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"He is a great coach. He has charisma, personality, a winning mentality.

"Moreover, he will find himself brilliantly in Italy because of the tactical game. Rafa studies everything on the table and directs the team from the bench like a orchestra conductor.

"Inter have made a good choice. After Mourinho, he is the only man capable of continuing Inter's winning run.

"Would I follow Benitez? I don’t know anything about my future yet.

"I can only say that I spent some wonderful years with him and his style of football suits me perfectly."
