Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is keen to bring former Arsenal captain William Gallas to White Hart Lane despite potential opposition from fans.

The 32-year-old defender was released by Arsenal at the end of last season after they refused to offer him more than a one-year contract.

And Redknapp has revealed he was trying to pull off a mirror image of Sol Campbell’s shock defection from Spurs to the Gunners nine years ago.

"I like Gallas. I think he's a great free transfer," said Redknapp.

"It is a possibility. He has not been greedy at all. His people have rung up and we spoke about it.

"He is a player I think would be a good player, he is an experienced player. He has played at the top level, he won championships with Chelsea."

Despite having played for Arsenal and fellow London rivals Chelsea, Redknapp believes Spurs fans would forgive Gallas if he became a star this season.

He added: "You can go on for ever about that. He played for Chelsea as well. We put too much importance on that all the time.

"If he comes in and plays rubbish then the crowd will slaughter him. If he comes in and plays great they will love him. That is football."
