Valencia was not so fortunate as the winger went down after a seemingly innocuous incident involving Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot.

Broadfoot put in a decent tackle on Valencia and won the ball fairly, but the Ecuadorian international landed awkwardly and badly damaged his left ankle.

TV replays showed his foot pointing in the wrong direction and he was eventually taken off on a stretcher with Broadfoot in obvious distress.

"I was absolutely gutted for him," Broadfoot told Glasgow Evening Times.

"I thought I had put in a decent tackle and everything was fine. I honestly don't know what happened to him. I just turned around and he was rolling about on the deck.

"I was keen for the United medical staff to get on the park and help him out straight away. As soon as I saw him on the ground, I knew it was serious. It was sickening to see.

"You don't like to see a fellow professional get an injury like that. It's not nice to see a guy lying on the ground with a bone sticking out of his leg.

"It looks like he is going to be out for a long, long time. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets back playing as soon as he possibly can."
