That strike saw Ronaldo surpass the previous best of 38 that was jointly held by former Real striker Hugo Sánchez, from the 1989/90 season, and the legendary Athletic Bilbao striker Telmo Zarra, who achieved the feat during the 1959/60 campaign.

Ronaldo, who had scored 11 goals in his last four games heading into Saturday's fixture, has now netted 53 in all competitions for Los Blancos this season.

"The reason I've scored so many goals is thanks to me team-mates and I'm very grateful to them," Ronaldo said after the game.

"I'm generous with my team-mates because they are the same with me. Without their help I wouldn't have been able to score 40 goals in the league.

"It's difficult to repeat these figures, but nothing is impossible and I'm going to continue working to achieve it."
