Just five days ago, the 25-year-old Marshall scored his first goal for his country en route to a penalty shootout loss against Honduras in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"It's incredible, I can't believe it... You never know what's going to happen to you tomorrow, but that's life," his agent Jorge Ulloa told a local radio station.

The AaB Aalborg playerdied along with his wife when his car collided head-on with a truck on a mountain road in eastern Costa Rican capital San José while they were travelling from his grandfather's funeral.

National team coach Ricardo La Volpe told reporters: "It's a tough blow. He was a young guy with a big future and I send my most heartfelt condolences to his family."
