The 26-year-old joined Wolfsburg from Italian club Juventus last year in a €15 million move but his career with the Bundesliga club is now over after his tantrum before the final game of the 2010/11 season.

Diego stormed out of the team hotel after being told by Magath that he would not be in the starting lineup for the last Bundesliga match of the season against Hoffenheim.

And Magath admits relations between player and club have been damaged beyond repair and believes the best option is for both to head their separate ways.

Magath told the club's website: "After the conversation it was clear that further co-operation will be difficult and that it is better if we go our separate ways."

The Brazilian will train with the club, who began their pre-season preparations on Friday, but will look for a new team.

"I will continue training separately, here, at Wolfsburg, until I reach an agreement with a club," Diego told Globoesporte.

"Perhaps next week there will be news. Botafogo, no doubt, have shown interest, but there is no agreement yet.

"Going back to Brazil, you get closer to the national squad. All that will be taken into consideration."

His contract, which runs until 2014, has not been terminated by the club.

He is still working under the agreement signed last year and is expected to train with the squad, though playing for them is unlikely.
