Hargreaves, who was restricted to just six minutes of first-team football at Manchester United after undergoing double knee surgery in December 2008, completed his surprise move across Manchester on Wednesday night after passing a three-hour medical on Tuesday.

A statement on City's official website read: "Owen Hargreaves has become the latest of Roberto Mancini's summer signings.

"The England midfielder joins as a free agent having left Manchester United at the end of last season.

"He has put pen to paper on a one-year contract and will train on Thursday."

The 30-year-old was shown the door by United at the end of last season after failing to complete a match in three years because of knee, shoulder and hamstring trouble.

Hargreaves then released a video on YouTube to prove he had overcome his long-term knee problems and it paid off.

He has proved his fitness to City, where he will likely be a backup to Nigel de Jong in the big-spending club's star-studded squad.
