Premier League: Man United 3-0 Bolton

Sunday, January 15, 2012

Veteran Paul Scholes scored his first goal after his surprise return from retirement as Manchester United beat Bolton Wanderers 3-0 at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney missed a glorious opportunity to put United in front early on, with Ádám Bogdán diving full length to his right to push away the striker's penalty after Danny Welbeck had been fouled in the box.

But Rooney turned provider shortly before the break, cutting the ball back across the box for Scholes to turn a low shot beyond Bogdán.

It was the 151st United goal of Scholes' career, and his first since August 2010 in a 2-2 draw at Fulham, the only time he found the net for the Red Devils last term.

Welbeck buried an overdue second on 75 minutes but was injured in the process, before Michael Carrick demonstrated his class with a measured finish from outside the box late on.
