Premier League: Liverpool 1-2 Wigan

Sunday, March 25, 2012

Gary Caldwell was inspirational at both ends of the field as Wigan Athletic left Anfield with a 2-1 victory over a badly under par Liverpool.

The home side fell behind on half an hour when Shaun Maloney kept his nerve from the penalty spot after Martin Škrtel, in trying to clear Jamie Carragher's aimless header, caught Victor Moses in the face.

Luis Suárez restored parity with just two minutes of the second half played as his sweeping finish from Steven Gerrard's right-wing delivery marked his 12th goal of the season.

Wigan grabbed the winner in the 63rd minute when Caldwell found himself in acres of space in the penalty area and the defender showed the footwork of a South American as he kept his balance and composure when slotting past Pepe Reina.
