After 20 matches Ajax had been sixth on the log, trailing PSV Eindhoven by eight points, but they embarked on a brilliant run of form that has seen them put together a run of 13 straight wins.

Over 52,000 fans crammed into the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday to watch Ajax as they tried to win the Dutch top-flight for the 31st time.

And those fans headed home happy after Siem de Jong's double sealed back-to-back titles for the Amsterdammers.

De Jong opened the scoring after eight minutes before adding another 13 minutes into the second half to start the celebrations.

"For the fans, last season was special because they waited so long for the third star on the shirt," said Ajax coach Frank de Boer.

"But for me and my staff this one feels more beautiful seeing what happened this season.

"All the injuries we had and then the turbulence through all the problems in our board, but we stayed loyal to our vision."
