Inspired by the superb Santi Cazorla, Arsenal had the better of proceedings and showed why boss Arsène Wenger has been talking about challenging for the title.

However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Joleon Lescott headed home after some questionable goalkeeping by Vito Mannone from David Silva's corner.

City became the dominant force after the break but conceded an 85th-minute equaliser after Laurent Koscielny rifled home from just inside the box.

Vincent Kompany went close to restoring the hosts' lead with five minutes remaining, improvising excellently to chest down and fire in a bicycle kick from which Sergio Agüero could only guide Mannone's save agonisingly wide of the post.
