Altidore opened the scoring in the 74th minute with a close-range header before setting up Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson to double the advantage with two minutes remaining.

While that would have been more than enough to put AZ through to the final, the 23-year-old left his best moment for last.

In the third of an announced three minutes of stoppage time, he collected the ball on the edge of the attacking third.

Noticing that Ajax goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen was way off his line, Altidore quickly decided to chip the ball over his head from 35 yards out.

That last tally puts the American on 23 total goals across all competitions this season, tying him with Dempsey's single-season record for most goals by an American playing abroad. Dempsey, now with Tottenham Hotspur, set the record last season with Fulham.
