Baby Cassano arrived into the world at 20.10 local time on Monday and weighed in at 3.3kg.

Cassano, who had to temporarily stop his career last year to undergo minor heart surgery, already has another son, Christopher.

"This is the second biggest joy in my life after the birth of my first son," the 30-year-old Cassano told TV show Undici.

"I named him Lionel because I'm a massive fan of the best player in history. My wife wasn't keen, but I then convinced her.

"In my opinion Messi is the most important player in history. I'm in love with him on a footballing level."
