Benfica pay touching tributes to Eusébio during Porto match

Monday, January 13, 2014

Benfica players and fans produced incredibly touching tributes to Eusébio during their 2-0 victory over title rivals FC Porto at the Estádio da Luz on Sunday.

Portuguese footballing legend Eusébio sadly passed away just over a week ago at the age of 71.

Widely considered one of the best players of all time, Eusébio starred as Benfica won a host of domestic and European honours in his spell at the club between 1960 and 1975.

His death was met with an outpouring of emotion in the country, with thousands of supporters gathering at the Estádio da Luz for a memorial service on Monday ahead of his funeral.

Ahead of the crunch match against Porto, Benfica fans once again paid tribute to the man who scored 733 goals in 745 matches during a remarkable career.

As well as a minute's silence and synchronised placards honouring the late star, each of the Benfica players wore the legendary striker's name on the back of their shirts.

And Benfica fittingly beat Porto 2-0 in the first game since Eusébio's death thanks to goals from Rodrigo and Ezequiel Garay.

"We had a hard week with a lot of emotion and sadness and we called on our supporters to give us a boost," Benfica captain Luisão told Benfica TV.

"There couldn't have been a better homage for Eusébio."
