Diego Simeone in furious bust-up with Raphaël Varane

Sunday, May 25, 2014

Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone stormed onto the pitch in a heated exchange with Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane towards the end of Saturday's Champions League final.

Cristiano Ronaldo had just sealed the 4-1 victory for Los Blancos, but an exuberant celebrations from Varane angered Simeone, who thought it was over the top.

While passing the centre circle on his way back to his own half, the young Frenchman kicked the ball towards the Atlético bench.

Varane's actions were much to the disdain of Simeone who booted the ball back towards the 21-year-old before running onto the pitch to confront him.

Players from both sides, as well as Atlético staff members, had to hold Simeone back before he was ultimately ushered back to the technical area.

"Varane provoked me by kicking the ball at me," Simeone explained at a press conference. "Us older guys don't like people doing that kind of thing to us.

"I also made a mistake with my reaction. He's a young guy with a bright future."
