Ex-Portsmouth player Válery Mézague found dead in his apartment in France

Sunday, November 16, 2014

Former Portsmouth and Cameroon midfielder Válery Mézague was found dead in his apartment in Toulon, France on Saturday.

The cause of death is unknown, but French police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman for the Toulon prosecutor's office told AFP: "An autopsy will take place on Monday, but at the moment we don't believe the death to be suspicious."

Mézague played seven times for Cameroon and featured for a number of French clubs including Montpellier and Sochaux in the top flight.

The 30-year-old made 11 Premier League appearances during a brief spell on loan with Portsmouth in the 2004/05 season.

However, Mézague had seen his career dip over the last five years as his club career were mostly spent in France's lower leagues.

He spent last season with League Two club Bury where he made seven appearances before joining French fifth division outfit Sporting Toulon Var.

In August 2003, Mézague was involved in a car crash that left him hospitalised and in a coma for three days.
