- The club exited Copa Peru despite the commercial success of the initiative.
Facing financial uncertainty after relegation to the Copa Peru - the country's fourth-tier competition - the historic Lima club launched an ambitious initiative inviting 1,000 businesses and supporters to sponsor their kit.
The campaign not only captured attention across Peruvian football but also generated the funds needed to keep the club operating.
An innovative sponsorship model
Launched in January under the slogan Los Mil Sponsors del Muni (The 1,000 Sponsors of Muni), the campaign broke away from traditional football sponsorship.Instead of relying on a handful of large commercial partners, Municipal divided their shirt into 1,000 individual advertising spaces, each sold for 200 Peruvian soles (around R$300 at the time).
The affordable pricing allowed local businesses, entrepreneurs and supporters to become official sponsors.
Within just three months, most of the available spaces had been sold.
When unveiling the project, the club described their vision as:
An initiative that challenges conventional sports marketing with a new sponsorship programme. The campaign generated approximately R$302,600, providing a crucial financial boost that helped Municipal continue its operations during a difficult period.
One thousand spaces are available for businesses and entrepreneurs at accessible prices.
Together, we can raise the funds needed to return the club to where it belongs.
A shirt unlike any other
The completed shirt featured hundreds of black-and-white sponsor blocks covering almost the entire design.Despite the large number of logos, the club preserved their traditional identity by keeping the famous red diagonal sash and club crest untouched.
The result was a distinctive pixelated appearance that quickly became one of the most talked-about football kits in Peru.
Pre-orders for the shirt opened on Saturday, with sponsors receiving discounted prices as an additional benefit.
Commercial success could not deliver promotion
Whilst the sponsorship campaign exceeded expectations off the pitch, results on the field proved less encouraging.Municipal advanced to the second stage of the Lima Departmental League after defeating Defensor Santa Tereza.
However, the club's Copa Peru campaign came to an end following defeat to Sport Humaya last Sunday.
The Copa Peru champions will earn automatic promotion to Liga 2 for the 2027 season, whilst the runners-up will secure a place in Peru's third division.
A historic club fighting back
Despite its recent struggles, Municipal remain one of Peru's most successful traditional clubs. The Lima-based side have won four Peruvian top-flight titles - in 1938, 1940, 1943 and 1950 - making it the country's fifth-most successful club by league championships.
Municipal have also appeared once in the Copa Libertadores, exiting in the preliminary round in 2017, and have competed in four editions of the Copa Sudamericana (2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019).
Although the club's remarkable sponsorship initiative could not prevent elimination from the Copa Peru, it has become a standout example of how innovation and community backing can provide financial stability for clubs facing difficult circumstances.
