Phil Neville has recalled the awkward moment he was turned down for a shirt swap after Manchester United's famous Champions League win over Real Madrid in 2003.

The former United defender admitted he left Old Trafford hoping to take home a souvenir from one of football's greatest teams, only to have his own shirt returned untouched after an unsuccessful exchange request.

Neville, now 49, came through United's academy alongside David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and his brother Gary Neville before enjoying one of the club's most successful eras.

Across 11 seasons with the first team, he won six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League before joining Everton in 2005.

Despite those achievements, one post-match memory still stands out for all the wrong reasons.

Real Madrid's Galácticos declined the shirt swap

Speaking to The Times, Neville recalled what happened after United's thrilling 4-3 victory over Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final in April 2003.

Having come off the bench during one of the competition's most memorable matches, he was eager to swap shirts with one of Madrid's legendary Galácticos.
I came off the United bench that night, in what was an incredible game. David Beckham scored twice for United and I think that probably sealed his move to the Bernabéu later that year.

After the game I was keen to swap my shirt for one of theirs. This was a brilliant Real team, after all. A side that boasted Zinedine Zidane, Luís Figo and Roberto Carlos, not to mention some other incredible players.

My shirt was handed in for an exchange in their dressing room, and after about five minutes their kitman came out and handed it back.
The incident left Neville empty-handed, with none of Madrid's stars interested in completing the exchange.

Manchester United won the battle but lost the tie

Although United produced a remarkable 4-3 victory at Old Trafford, it was not enough to overturn the first-leg deficit.

Goals from Ruud van Nistelrooy, an own goal by Iván Helguera and a second-half brace from Beckham nearly completed an unlikely comeback.

However, Ronaldo's memorable hat-trick across the tie ensured Los Blancos progressed to the semi-finals with a 6-5 aggregate victory.

The match remains one of the most iconic Champions League encounters of the modern era, remembered as much for Ronaldo's brilliance as Beckham's impact from the bench.

Neville considering his next move

Neville is currently weighing up his next managerial opportunity after being dismissed by the Portland Timbers in May.

His two-and-a-half-year spell in Major League Soccer ended after 95 matches, during which he recorded 34 victories.

Before taking charge in Portland, Neville managed Inter Miami and previously led the England women's national team following the end of his playing career.

Earlier this year, he also revealed that England manager Thomas Tuchel had sought his advice as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup.
