West Ham United midfielder Edson Álvarez is facing fresh allegations over the alleged sale of fake Covid-19 vaccination certificates, just weeks after a Mexican filmmaker linked him to an alleged kidnapping plot.

Filmmaker Juan José López Ordóñez has accused the Mexico international, his former father-in-law Jonathan Toache Bedolla and a doctor of involvement in a network allegedly selling fraudulent vaccination documents during the pandemic.

According to Mexican newspaper El Financiero, López Ordóñez claimed that the operation provided certificates to people who wanted to demonstrate that they had been vaccinated without necessarily receiving the doses.

Edson Álvarez accused of involvement in alleged Covid certificate scheme

López Ordóñez made the latest allegations during a press conference, claiming he had witnessed the operation of a network involved in producing fraudulent vaccination certificates.

He reportedly alleged that the scheme involved Álvarez, Toache Bedolla and doctor Diana Magaña, who were said to have operated a platform called Resistencia.

According to the filmmaker's account, the platform allegedly enabled users to generate vaccination certificates containing official-looking details, including QR codes, vaccine information and other identifying information.

López Ordóñez claimed that customers paid as much as $500 per certificate.

He also alleged that more than 27,000 certificates had been issued during the pandemic. Those figures and the alleged transactions have not been independently established.

Celebrities reportedly named in allegations

López Ordóñez also claimed that several well-known Mexican entertainers had obtained certificates through the alleged network.

Among the names reported were actress and television presenter Yolanda Andrade and musician Jay de la Cueva.

However, being named in the filmmaker's allegations does not establish that any of the individuals purchased fraudulent documents or committed an offence.

According to El Financiero, neither Álvarez nor the other people reportedly named had publicly responded to the latest certificate allegations.

Previous kidnapping allegations against Álvarez

The latest accusations follow earlier allegations by López Ordóñez concerning an alleged kidnapping in Mexico City in 2024.

Speaking to Mexican publication TV Notas, the filmmaker claimed that Álvarez had knowledge of the alleged plot, whilst maintaining that the midfielder was not directly involved in the kidnapping itself.

López Ordóñez also alleged that he was held at gunpoint by Toache Bedolla, Álvarez's former father-in-law.

Álvarez previously issued a statement on social media denying the earlier allegations and rejecting suggestions that he had been involved in the situation.

The new claims have emerged amid a wider dispute between the footballer and the filmmaker. López Ordóñez has also reportedly alleged that he is owed 3.5 million Mexican pesos in connection with a documentary project involving Álvarez.

Álvarez's West Ham future remains uncertain

Away from the allegations, Álvarez's immediate footballing future at West Ham remains unclear.

The midfielder joined the Hammers from Ajax Amsterdam in 2023 in a reported £35 million transfer and spent the previous season on loan at Turkish club Fenerbahçe.

Following his return to East London, he has continued training with the first team but has struggled to secure regular matchday involvement.

His only appearance mentioned in the original report came in West Ham's 3-1 League Cup victory over Portsmouth on 8 August. He had not been included in a matchday squad since that fixture at the time of the report.

What happens next?

The latest allegations place Álvarez under renewed scrutiny, but no conclusion about his involvement should be drawn from the filmmaker's statements alone.

The key questions are whether supporting evidence will be presented, whether the relevant Mexican authorities will investigate the alleged scheme and whether Álvarez or West Ham will issue a response to the latest claims.

For now, the allegations remain unproven. Any further developments should be assessed against independently verified evidence and official statements rather than speculation.
