Sheva set for Sampdoria?

Monday, July 14, 2008

Sampdoria have confirmed Andriy Shevchenko will join them on loan, if they can agree on the Chelsea striker's wages for a season-long loan.

Sampdoria's general manager Beppe Marotta claimed that Sheva is 'happy to join us' and the only problems around is his wages.

Shevchenko's future at Chelsea continues to be the subject of speculation after failing to sparkle during two years at Stamford Bridge.

Sheva has been consistently linked with a return to Italy with his former club AC Milan have expressed an interest in signing the 31-year-old on loan and were favourites to secure his signature.

But their Serie A rivals Sampdoria have shown themselves to be clever on the transfer market.

Shevchenko has endured two woeful seasons at Stamford Bridge after moving from the San Siro for £30 million in 2006, scoring just nine goals in 47 Premier League matches for the Blues.

If successful, Il Blucerchiati could gain the rewards just like last year's loan signing Antonio Cassano, who joined them in a similar deal from Real Madrid last season and rehabilitated him to the level that he earned a place at Italy's Euro 2008 squad.
