Chelsea still has work to do in the final group match after being held to a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux.
The Blues appeared to be cruising into the last 16 after Nicolas Anelka fired them ahead on the hour mark.
But Alou Diarra headed in an equaliser in the 83rd minute to keep their hopes of progression alive.
Just to ensure a nasty hangover, Frank Lampard was sent off near the end for two yellow cards.
AS Roma went top of Group A and on the brink of qualification thanks to a 3-1 win away to CFR Cluj.
The Giallorossi opened the scoring through midfielder Matteo Brighi after just 11 minutes, and captain Francesco Totti doubled the advantage with a superb free-kick from 25 yards after Julio Baptista had been fouled.
Yssouf Koné gave Cluj a lifeline by pulling one back before half-time, but Brighi scored his second of the night to put the game to bed on 64 minutes.
Roma are a point clear at the top, needing only a draw from their last match against Bordeaux to qualify.
GROUP B
Serie A leaders Inter Milan are through to the knockout stages despite a surprise 1-0 home defeat to Panathinaikos.
Josu Sarriegi scored a shock winner in the 67th minute as the Spanish defender struck from close range after Julio César had parried out a Giannis Goumas header.
With Anorthosis Famagusta held to a 2-2 draw by Werder Bremen, the result lifts Henk Ten Cate's side above the Cypriots into second place - meaning they need only a draw in their final match against Anorthosis to reach the last 16.
Anorthosis Famagusta came close to joining Inter Milan in the next round but squandered a two-goal lead and were held 2-2 by Werder Bremen to slip from second to third in Group B.
The Cypriot champions went 2-0 ahead courtesy of second half goals by Nicos Nicolaou and Sávio.
Diego pulled one back on 72 minutes from penalty spot after Aaron Hunt had been brought down by Nicolaou.
Hugo Almeida then snatched an equaliser for Bremen two minutes from time to deny Anorthosis all three points.
Anorthosis will face second placed Panathinaikos in the final group match with the Greeks needing only a point to qualify.
GROUP C
Barcelona secured top spot in Group C with a 5-2 win at Sporting Lisbon, who finish as runners-up.
Thierry Henry opened the scoring after just 14 minutes before Gerard Piqué added a second three minutes later from a scruffy effort.
Lionel Messi made it 3-0 four minutes into the second half with a quickly-taken free-kick.
The hosts gave themselves hope of a comeback when Miguel Veloso curled home a free-kick on 65 minutes and just 60 seconds later Liédson smashed home after Rafael Márquez failed to cut out a long ball.
But Barça restored the three goal lead when Marco Caneira's attempted clearance looped over keeper Rui Patrício and into the net.
Patrício was then sent off on 73 minutes for bringing down Bojan Krkic in the box and the striker stepped up to put away the resultant penalty.
Shakhtar Donetsk booked a place in the latter stages of the UEFA Cup with a 5-0 home win over Basel.
Brazilian playmaker Jádson opened the rout in the 32nd minute with a neat finish from the edge of the box.
Willian doubled the cushion on 51 minutes before Jádson added the third 15 minutes later.
Jádson completed his hat-trick in the 72nd minute and two minutes later Yevhen Seleznyov wrapped up the victory with his left foot.
GROUP D
Liverpool clinched their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Marseille at Anfield.
The only goal of the match came on 23 minutes when the unmarked Steven Gerrard headed home Álvaro Arbeloa’s cross at the back post.
It was Gerrard's fifth goal in the competition this term, making him joint top-scorer with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.
The Liverpool skipper then was hit by a cigarette lighter thrown by Marseille fans while taking a corner at the end of the first half.
Atlético Madrid have joined Liverpool in the next round following a 2-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven at an empty Vicente Calderón.
The match played behind closed doors because of crowd violence when the Spanish team played Marseille October 1.
The Spaniards raced into a 2-0 lead inside 28 minutes thanks to goals from Simão Sabrosa and skipper Maxi Rodríguez.
And, although Danny Koevermans pulled a goal back for PSV, Atlético held out to book their place in the Champions League last 16.
