Copa del Rey: Barcelona and Valencia advance

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Barcelona and holders Valencia booked their place in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey while Villarreal joined fellow topflight side Real Madrid - which knocked out of the competition after losing to third-division Real Unión - on the sideline.

Villarreal may be second in La Liga and still unbeaten, but they were unable to carry out a miraculous comeback after suffering a 5-0 defeat to Polideportivo Ejido in the first leg.

The Yellow Submarine went behind to Jorge Molina’s backheel in the 49th minute before Guillermo Franco equalised five minutes later.

Barcelona advanced to the next round as they defeated Benidorm 1-0 and 2-0 on aggregate.

Lionel Messi volleyed home the lone goal in the 86th minute after goalkeeper Juan Carlos Caballero saved his initial penalty.

Defending champions Valencia completed a 7-1 aggregate triumph over Portugalete after a 3-0 win over the fourth-tier side at Mestalla.

Miguel Ángel Angulo opened the scoring after 21 minutes before Michel and Pablo Hernández added second-half goals.
