Copa del Rey: Top flight clubs through to quarterfinals

Thursday, January 15, 2009

Barcelona strolled past Atlético Madrid while Real Betis' and Espanyol's victories ensured the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey will feature only Spain's top division clubs.

Favourites Barcelona took a 3-1 lead into their second leg against Atlético and completed the job with a 2-1 win against Los Rojiblancos at the Nou Camp.

But Barça fell behind to Florent Sinama-Pongolle's header in the 24th minute. However, Bojan Krkic replied with a header five minutes later before Eiður Guðjohnsen clinched a 2-1 win on 76 minutes.

Barcelona will now face neighbours Espanyol, who were pushed all the way by giantkiller Polideportivo Ejido before going through on the away goals rule following a 3-3 aggregate tie.

Third division Real Unión could not repeat their shock success over Real Madrid from the previous round as they slipped to their second successive 1-0 defeat against Betis, for whom Arzu netted the only goal.

Winger Vicente Rodríguez scored twice, including the winner in the 102nd minute, to lead holders Valencia to a 3-1 extra time win at home to Racing Santander.

Valencia will meet 2007 winners Sevilla, who cruised through with a 5-1 aggregate success over Deportivo La Coruña.

In the other match, Real Mallorca progressed to the last 8 with a 4-2 aggregate success against Almería, while Sporting Gijón squeezed through against Real Valladolid following an injury-time goal from Jorge.
