FA Cup: United set up meeting with Spurs

Monday, January 5, 2009

Manchester United and Aston Villa earned themselves an FA Cup fourth round spot with victories over Southampton and Gillingham respectively.

Teenagers Danny Welbeck, 18, Nani, 22, and Darron Gibson, 21, all scored for the Red Devils as they recorded an easy 3-0 away victory over 10-man Southampton.

Welbeck, who was started because Sir Alex Ferguson decided to rest Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tévez, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he swept home the rebound after John O'Shea's header had been pushed onto the bar by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis.

Saints were reduced to 10 men in the 36th minute when Matt Paterson was sent off for an ugly challenge on Nemanja Vidić.

Nani doubled the lead three minutes after the interval from the penalty spot before Gibson scored the third with nine minutes remaining.

Earlier, James Milner celebrated his 23rd birthday with a double to lead Villa to a 2-1 victory over Gillingham.

Milner put Villa ahead after 13 minutes when he fired a right-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Simon Royce.

But Gillingham deservedly levelled just before the hour as Simeon Jackson ghosted past Villa defender Zat Knight before drilled a thunderous effort in off the post.

But a soft penalty - given for a foul by Adam Miller on Ashley Young - gave Milner the chance to net his second and put seven-time FA Cup winner Villa into the last 32.
