Inter pursue Benzema

Friday, January 16, 2009

Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas has confirmed that Inter Milan are interested in signing their striker Karim Benzema.

The Nerazzurri are believed to be in the market for a striker who can take some of the weight off Zlatan Ibrahimović’s shoulders.

The 21-year-old is one of the hottest properties in European football and has already scored 15 goals this season.

Despite the interest, Aulas doesn't want to lose the striker just yet.

"We will do everything possible to keep him with us a little longer," Aulas is quoted as saying by Setanta.

"If the team’s results are in line with our ambitions, we will have good reasons to convince him to stay.

"We don’t have to view the clubs that want Benzema as enemies. On the contrary, it’s an honour that Manchester United, Real Madrid, Inter and Barcelona are interested in Karim.

"This means that they are interested in Lyon and that they follow us with attention. It’s better to arouse envy than pain."

As Aulas suggests, Inter will face stiff competition if they want to bring the French hitman to San Siro.

Until now, Inter were thought to be focusing all their attempts on luring the unsettled Didier Drogba away from Chelsea.
