Real Madrid battled back from a goal down to beat bottom club Osasuna 3-1 at the Bernabéu.

The home fans were stunned when Iranian midfielder Javad Nekounam rose above Fabio Cannavaro and headed Jaroslav Plašil's cross into the far corner after 20 minutes.

But Real were gifted the equaliser just after the break when goalkeeper Roberto mishandled Sergio Ramos' long shot and into the roof of the net.

Gonzalo Higuaín fired Real in front on 64 minutes when he tapped in a cross from the in-form winger Arjen Robben.

And things got worse for Osasuna when Juanfran wrong-footed Pepe and appeared to have won a penalty but, after some confusion, he was issued with his marching orders for a second diving. He was first booked in the first half after being brought down by Fernando Gago for what appeared to be a clear penalty.

Robben then put the result beyond doubt when found the net in the second minute of stoppage time.

Valencia missed the chance to reduce the gap on leaders Barcelona as they went down 3-2 to Athletic Bilbao in a pulsating match at San Mames.

The visitors took the lead with their first attack as striker David Villa fired home after just two minutes.

Igor Gabilondo drew Bilbao level on 17 minutes when he rose above David Albelda and headed into the corner.

Valencia restored the lead on the half hour mark through Fernando Morientes but things suddenly turned sour for Los Che when goalkeeper Renan Brito appeared to pull his groin making a long clearance upfield.

Young debutant Vicente Guaita came on for the Brazilian and the first job for the 21-year-old was to pick the ball out of the net after he was beaten by Javi Martínez's header four minutes before the break.

Bilbao grabbed the winner with the last act of the match when Fernando Llorente scored from the penalty spot after Manuel Fernandes was given his second yellow card for holding back Martínez as he shot on goal.
