Jamal Musiala explains Bayern Munich collapses after neurological diagnosis
KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • Jamal Musiala has revealed a treatable neurological dysfunction behind his recent episodes.
  • The Bayern Munich star collapsed against Leipzig and Heidenheim within four days.
  • Neurologists have cleared Musiala to continue playing, according to the player.
Jamal Musiala has revealed that a neurological dysfunction causing brief, temporary and treatable absence seizures was behind the two alarming episodes that saw him collapse during Bayern Munich friendlies within four days.

The 23-year-old went down again during Tuesday's 4-2 victory over FC Heidenheim, just days after a similar incident against RB Leipzig.

Musiala had only been on the pitch for around six to eight minutes after coming on as a substitute when he suddenly appeared unsteady and collapsed.

Bayern's medical staff immediately attended to him, whilst his team-mates formed a protective circle around the Bayern midfielder.

He was able to get back to his feet and leave the pitch with medical assistance.

The incident nevertheless prompted renewed concern given that it came only days after his previous collapse.

Musiala confirms neurological condition

Musiala subsequently addressed the concern surrounding both incidents in a statement on Instagram.
First things first - I'm doing well! I'm especially grateful for your messages and support!

I understand that many of you are worried. I'd like to alleviate those concerns today and explain something: I've been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction.

These can lead to the recent episodes, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim.
Musiala said he was receiving medical treatment and remained optimistic about his recovery, adding that Bayern, his family and close friends were supporting him.
Importantly, there are no further health risks. In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my daily life and pursuing my passion for playing football.

I've taken responsibility for that. Overall, I have a very good feeling and I'm on the right track.

What happened to Musiala against RB Leipzig?

The first of the two recent incidents occurred during Bayern's 3-1 win over RB Leipzig on Saturday.

Musiala appeared disorientated and unsteady after scoring Bayern's third goal. He struggled to remain upright before beginning to fall, with team-mates Ismael Saibari and Joshua Kimmich moving quickly to help him.

Medical staff subsequently attended to the midfielder before he was helped from the field.

At the time, Bayern did not publicly explain the cause of the episode.

The recurrence against Heidenheim prompted further concern, particularly because it happened only four days later.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said after Tuesday's match that the club was aware of Musiala's situation and that the player would address it himself.

Musiala's latest health update puts speculation into context

Musiala's statement provides the clearest explanation yet for the two incidents.

Rather than leaving supporters to speculate about what caused his collapses, the Bayern star confirmed that medical specialists had identified the neurological issue and were treating it.

His comments also underline that the details of his medical condition remain private.
I hope you can understand me better now. At the same time, I ask for your understanding that I would like to keep this matter within my closest circle of confidants, the club, and the experts.

Bayern face a delicate situation with Musiala

Although Musiala says he has medical clearance to continue playing, his two recent episodes will inevitably require careful management from Bayern's medical and coaching staff.

The midfielder has already endured a difficult period physically. He missed around six months last season after suffering an ankle fracture and only returned towards the latter stages of the campaign before representing Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

That makes the latest development another significant consideration as Bayern prepare for the new season.

For now, however, Musiala's own message is reassuring: he feels well, is receiving specialist treatment and remains optimistic about continuing his career.

The focus now is likely to remain on his health, medical monitoring and a careful return to competitive football rather than speculation surrounding the cause of his condition.
