Brazilian footballer Alexandre Souza collapses after seizure in Flamengo match
Brazilian footballer Alexandre Souza suffered a frightening medical emergency after collapsing on the pitch just eight minutes into Sampaio Corrêa's match against city rivals Flamengo at the iconic Maracanã Stadium.

The 24-year-old midfielder fell to the ground following a seizure during the Campeonato Carioca fixture, prompting immediate concern from players, officials and fans inside the stadium.

Distressing footage showed a team-mate fanning Souza with his shirt as medical staff rushed onto the pitch and play was halted.

An ambulance was quickly called, and Souza was conscious as he was stretchered off to warm applause from supporters.

However, reports from Brazil say he suffered a second seizure shortly after arriving at hospital and was placed under close medical observation for at least 24 hours.

Club issues reassuring update

In the early hours of the morning, Sampaio Corrêa released a statement confirming that initial medical tests had ruled out any heart or neurological damage.

The club said Souza was scheduled to undergo further examinations, including MRI scans and blood tests, before doctors decided whether he could be discharged or would need to remain in hospital.

The match, which went on to finish 7-1 in favour of Flamengo, was overshadowed by the incident.

A year on from horror motorbike crash

The latest scare comes just over a year after Souza narrowly escaped death in a serious road accident.

In January last year, he was struck by a car whilst riding his motorbike back to Saquarema, around 90 minutes east of Rio de Janeiro, following a match against Botafogo.

The collision left him wearing a neck brace for several months and undergoing intensive physiotherapy, with doctors warning he had come close to being left tetraplegic.

After a long and gruelling recovery, Souza only returned to competitive football last month, making his comeback on 17 January - against Botafogo, the same team he had faced before the accident.

Speaking after his return, Souza reflected on how close he came to losing everything.
It really seems like God reserved this day for me to never forget.

With the accident, everything changed in my life - doubts, uncertainties, immense challenges. After so much dedication and patience, I'm back.
He also paid tribute to his family.
I didn't know if I would ever play football again, and they stood by me. I am certain I will return.

Thankful for the support

Following Sunday's health scare, Souza took to social media to thank fans and well-wishers for their support.

His collapse comes just weeks after tragedy struck in Portugal, where 27-year-old footballer Nassur Bacem died after suffering cardiac arrest during a cup match - a stark reminder of the risks athletes face, even at the highest levels of fitness.

For now, the focus remains on Souza's recovery, with fans across Brazil and beyond hoping the resilient midfielder can once again overcome adversity and safely return to the game he loves.
