Robbie Keane's Liverpool future in doubt again after Cup snub

Monday, January 26, 2009

Robbie Keane's Liverpool future has been thrown into doubt again after he was omitted from the squad as the Reds forced a replay with Everton in the FA Cup yesterday.

The £20 million summer signing went absent after being told French rookie David Ngog had replaced him on the bench.

Keane has managed only seven goals since his summer move from Tottenham and has grown increasingly frustrated at failing to gain a regular place in Rafa Benítez’s starting line-up.

Speculation has been gradually mounting in regard to Keane's future, and it will only swell after his boss confirmed that his unsettled forward stayed away from Anfield altogether at the weekend.

Benítez told the press: "We have a good squad and Keane was not selected.

"I have not seen him so I don’t know how he has reacted. But every player wants to be involved so I would expect he is not happy.

"He’s working hard and, for me, the most important thing is if the players work hard for the team.

"Ngog scored twice for the reserves in their last match, so he was a good option. And we have Ryan Babel and Lucas who can play forward, so we were well covered."
